OMS adds a new Qualification
Successful health and safety training company, OMS, have now launched a further qualification for prospective delegates, PTTLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector). Having spent time talking to their delegates, OMS have found that many delegate and Service Leavers are finding that it is preferred by prospective employers to hold a basic teaching qualification to enable them to deliver training ‘ in house’ in their future roles.
So what is PTLLS?
PTLLS stands for ‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector’. This qualification is aimed at teachers delivering lessons to students attending college as well as trainers and or assessors providing courses and underpinning knowledge for work and vocational qualifications. The intention with PTLLS is to have ‘a one size fits all’ qualification that will give all qualified teachers a substantive qualification allowing them to pass the necessary threshold to teach.
OMS’ PTLLS 7303 qualification certified by City & Guilds, will provide delegates with an opportunity to gain accreditation from a one-unit qualification giving them the necessary training to enter the teaching or training profession, gaining as they go a Level 3 or 4 qualification and taking the first step towards the QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) qualification.
Is PTLLS for you?
Your own intentions in choosing teaching as a career are fundamental to which qualification you should seek to achieve. If your future is to teach school age children in an everyday school setting, the PTLLS qualification is not immediately relevant for your purposes. The PTLLS is more targeted towards those who wish to deliver vocational and/or specialised learning for the purposes of improving a learner’s employability. Teacher training is an option taken on by many delegates directly after they themselves have gained a further education qualification such as a Bachelors or Masters Degree in their specialised subject/field.
A PTLLS qualification is generally achieved at the end of 30 classroom learning hours and 30 non-classroom learning hours, and will, if followed correctly, teach the delegate to develop an awareness of their own professional role, the value systems underpinning that role and the legal requirements for carrying it out. The profession requires you to have as much knowledge of the subject you are teaching, an appreciation of the principles of learning, teaching and assessment for the success of the student.
What jobs could this lead to?
Achieving this qualification could help you to get started as an educator in the lifelong learning sector. Possible jobs include–
• Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant
• Training Instructor
• Training Manager.
After taking the Award, OMS can also offer you the opportunity to progress to other qualifications that will help you achieve Associate Teachers Learning and Skills (ATLS) status or Qualified Teacher. Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. These are:-
• Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTTLS) – this qualification is for those who would like to become Associate Teachers
• Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTTLS) – for those who would like to work as a full Teacher, including anyone teaching literacy, numeracy or ESOL.
What does it involve?
Delegates looking to gain a PTLLS qualification will be required to demonstrate a range of competencies that stretch from the fairly straightforward, such as ‘basic theory of education’ and ‘job roles and responsibilities’ to more specific and involved modules such as keeping a reflective teaching journal and giving a ‘micro teaching session’. All of these elements will be assessed by an Internal Verifier who will determine to which level the candidate has satisfied each of the elements. In order to qualify for a place on the course the delegate will be necessary to demonstrate a sufficient level of literacy and be qualified in the subject you wish to teach. It is unnecessary to have taught before . The idea of the assessment process is to determine whether or not you have the competency to teach.
