A computer, such as the one that you are using now, is often referred to as Display Screen Equipment (DSE). DSE can be defined (amongst other things) as a computer, a TV monitor or a control panel for a lathe or other equipment and it is covered under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 (amended 2002).

It is one piece of health and safety legislation which applies to home workers as well as those in the workplace, especially if you use a computer whilst working from home.

Employees who do not know how to use their equipment can end up with problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, repetitive strain injury, eye strain, headaches, stress and backache. These injuries can often leave the employer liable to compensation claims from staff members.

Many insurance companies worried about the rising costs of claims made by employees are now requiring evidence that DSE risk assessments and training has been undertaken. Here at OMS we have DSE courses which can be tailored to suit an employer’s specific needs and requirements. Our courses meet current statute legislation and help to ensure that staff members have a happier and more productive workforce. Our course lasts for a morning and when compared to the cost of defending claims, can be money well spent.
